Air Duct Cleaning

Air ducts have the ability to capture large amounts of dust.

If you ever looked under a bed that has not been dusted for a long period time, rest assured the air ducts of your heating and cooling system can make the under-bed area clean by comparison.

How does the dust get there?

Air ducts are made of sheet metal, some are lined on the inside with a fiber material and some ducts are made up of pressed fiberglass.

* Return air trunk - the fan from the heating/cooling appliance draws in the air through this duct to the appliance to be heated or cooled

* Supply air trunk - blows the air that was drawn through the return air trunk back into the living space

* Branch return duct - draws air from individual rooms and transports it to the return air trunk

* Branch supply duct - blows air into the individual rooms from the supply trunk duct

* Air conditioning coil

* Fan - moves the air through the ducts

As you can probably easily see, dust and contaminants have an easy time of being deposited on the inside surface of these ducts

Air duct cleaning can be counter productive if not performed by a qualified, competent duct cleaning company.

Inferior equipment can also cause more problems than you started with.

If you are considering having your ducts cleaned (I don't know why you would not), you should also have your ducts tested for leakage.

If the return air ducts are leaky they will draw in dust and other contaminants onto your newly cleaned ducts as well as causing other air quality problems
