"The Energy Recovery Ventilator"An energy recovery ventilator (ERV) is the strongest approach when it comes to home ventilation systems. In addition to bringing fresh air into the home, an energy recovery ventilator recaptures a large percentage of heat and humidity that is normally lost through other ventilation methods during the heating season. It also has the benefit of reducing the amount of humidity that enters the home from the outside when you are running an air conditioner during the cooling season.
How it works:
An energy recovery ventilator can be integrated with an existing ducted heating or cooling system.
As you can see, an independantly ducted ERV can be used to ventilate a bathroom, however this is only practical during new construction or remodeling projects. The price of an installed energy recovery ventilation system starts at approximately $2,600.(integrated with an existing ducted heating or cooling system). Hire someone to perform a blower door test before you invest in an energy recovery ventilator. Doing so will tell you two things: 1) Do you really need one? 2) What size will you need?
