Facts About Unvented Heaters

Unvented heaters are being marketed as a safe, energy efficient alternative for space heating.

These heaters come in a variety of configurations, such as unvented gas heaters, vent-free stoves, gas log fireplaces and kerosene heaters.

The sellers of these products will tell you they meet or exceed government safety performance standards.

This is true to an extent.

These heaters are required to have a safety pilot and oxygen depletion sensor that will shut off the burner if the room gets low on oxygen or if the fuel supply is interrupted, giving protection against carbon monoxide and fire.

Carbon monoxide and fire are NOT the only things to worry about

Indoor air quality becomes an issue with unvented heaters.

When the heaters operate, they release chemical compounds that include, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, particulates as well as water vapor.

Problems from these pollutants can range from irritation of eyes and nose, shortness of breath to chronic lung disease, especially to children and people with asthma.

The water vapor that is created can find it's way on a cold surface with the potential for mold.

If it's a must that you operate an unvented heater (hopefully, you won't!), be sure you have adequate ventilation.

Always look for an alternative to these heaters.
