Whole House
Steam Humidifiers

Whole house steam humidifiers are a good solution for dry indoor air compared to other types of humidifiers, such as bypass or drum types.

These units are available as stand-alone (console) and furnace or duct-mounted configurations.

Furnace or duct-mounted systems are installed on an air duct system that have a furnace, heat pump or air conditioner attached.

Non-steam duct-mounted humidifiers depend on the furnace to heat the ducts in order for the humidifier to introduce moisture into the living space.

The drawback to the non-steam, duct-mounted units is unless the thermostat is calling for heat the humidifier does not put moisture into the house.

This is not very effective, especially if you have a heat pump or air conditioner.

There is not enough heat in the duct system to meet the rated capcity of the humidifier.

Whole house steam humidifers do not depend on the heat of the furnace because of built-in electrical elements.

Some steam systems such as EWC whole house steam humidifiers have a control that will turn on the furnace when there is a need for moisture.

Stand alone (console), non-steam units have to have water added manually, while stand-alone steam systems are automatically filled with water.

Stand-alone steam units require plumbing for the water supply and the drain while the non-steam does not need plumbing.

Maintenance

Both types require maintenance.

Non-steam systems need to have the pads replaced and the reservoir cleaned.

Furnace or duct-mounted whole house steam humidifiers need the heating elements cleaned as well as the reservoir pan.

Console steam humidifiers usually have a cartridge that has to be replaced.

What type is healthier?

Steam systems are a healthier choice because the water has to be heated above 140 degrees.

Temperatures at this range and above have the ability to will kill bacteria (legionella).

Water in non-steam systems is subject to temperatures between 80 degrees and 130 degrees at certain times.

This can create a good breeding ground for certain types of bacteria.

Cost

Steam humidifiers range in price from $650 to over $2,000.

The price range for non-steam units vary from as low as $129 to $700.

You usually get what you pay for.
